Tango in the Courtyard

14 Jul 2017 - by Graham

It has been a busy couple of weeks for us here at Jivebeat, with festivals, classes, filming videos, and much more taking up our time. The two biggest events for us though were The Big O vintage festival in Orpington held in the Priory Gardens on the 1st July, and the Daisy Dog Vintage Fair in East Grinstead that was held in the lovely Meridian Hall on the 9th July.

The Big O describes itself as a vintage fair spanning the 40s to the 80s and has stalls, music, displays, entertainment, things for kids and families to do all day, and lots of local businesses showing their wares. Our gazebo was in the Community section up near the Priory building itself and there was a steady flow of people passing our gazebo and stopping to find out what we do from the moment the event opened through to closing time. This was its third year and by all accounts is getting bigger and better every time. We look forward to being back there in 2018!

The Daisy Dog Vintage Fair seems to be a regular event for us this year, and East Grinstead was our third (after Westerham and Oxted). This was their first time in East Grinstead and the setting in the Meridian Hall and East Court was stunning. The courtyard where we had our gazebo looks out onto a park that seems to go on for ever, and this gave a magnificent backdrop for our dance demonstrations that we gave to the soothing vocals of Hannah-Marie who was singing live at the event all day.

There was a lot of interest in Jivebeat at both events, with a total of around 30 people signing up as members and many more taking away flyers and looking us up online to see where we are and what it is that we do. We gave impromptu dance classes, demonstrations of both LeRoc and Argentine Tango, and talked to anyone we could persuade to stand still for long enough!

Unusually for us, at the Daisy Dog fair on the 9th we actually managed to stay focussed for long enough to remember to turn on the camera and record one of our dances. This was a short demonstration of our version of argentine tango, danced to music provided by the brilliant Hannah-Marie.

Daisy Dog in Oxted - Report

30 May 2017 - by Graham

Despite the forecast initially being for a day of apocalyptic rain, we had a great time today at the Daisy Dog Vintage Fair in Oxted. The weather turned out to be far kinder to us than predicted, and with only a few very light showers throughout the day we were able to dance on the patio amongst the tables and show everyone how much fun dancing really is. The wonderful Hannah-Marie (www.hannah-marie.co.uk) provided the music throughout the event, and we danced on the patio behind her in a variety of different styles from slow blues to fast jive.

Many thanks to all the amazing people we met there, some of whom were introduced to partner dancing for the very first time. We hope to see you all at a Jivebeat evening soon!

A number of you have expressed a strong interest in learning Argentine Tango, including most of the people we met at Oxted, so by popular demand - for now at least, we will continue to teach it on Thursday evenings at Hurst Green. The classes will build on what we learn week on week but we will continue to make them accessible to new tango dancers, so feel free join in when you can. See the diary for a full schedule of when and where, and see our tango classes page for more information about the dance itself.

And remember that we will still only charge £8 for the whole evening, whether you just do the modern jive class, the tango class, or stick around for everything! So what have you got to lose? Everybody is welcome to join in, and it will keep you fit and supple!

Daisy Dog Vintage Fair - Oxted

18 May 2017 - by Graham

On Monday the 29th May (the late May bank holiday) we will be at the Daisy Dog Vintage Fair in Oxted, promoting both our Hurst Green and Sevenoaks venues. If all goes according to plan, we will be outside the main hall in a bright green gazebo with a Jivebeat banner on the front, and we will be doing demos, talking about what we do at Jivebeat, and signing people up as members (all free, of course!). I will probably also be selling some of my books and there will no doubt be our usual display of vintage cameras and gadgetry.

If you have a spare hour or two that day and can pop along to help us with the demonstrations that would be much appreciated. There are free classes in it for anyone who helps out on the day! Drop us a line at enquiries@jivebeat.uk to let us know if you can be there.

Doors open for the fair at 10am, and it runs until 4pm.

Upcoming Events and Fairs

23 Apr 2017 - by Graham

It looks as though it's going to be a busy summer. We have already had our first appearance at a vintage fair this year and we are booked in for many more over the next few months, so come and say hello if you're in the area. On Easter Monday we were at the Daisy Dog Vintage Fair in Westerham with just a stall and a lot of flyers for people to take away, but the next one in Oxted and the one after that in East Grinstead we will have a stand outside and be doing demonstrations throughout the day. We will also probably be appearing at the Big O festival in Orpington (to be confirmed), and will be part of the vintage tent experience at the Biggin Hill Festival of Flight in August.

And these are just the ones that we have booked already. We have several more events lined up that we hope to get into as well, so watch this space for details.

In the meantime, here's a picture of a Spitfire from the Festival of Flight in 2014.
